The Emotional Side of Sharing Your Demos (And How to Stay Creative Anyway)

Let’s be real for a second: sharing your music, especially when it’s still rough, is hard.

A demo feels personal. It’s not finished yet. It’s raw. It’s still figuring itself out — just like you are when you’re making it. Hitting send on a demo, even to a close friend or collaborator, can feel like standing on stage in your underwear. Vulnerable doesn’t even begin to cover it.

But here’s the truth most people won’t say out loud: if you’re waiting until the fear goes away to share your work, you might be waiting forever. That nervous feeling doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It usually means you care.

There’s a balance, though. You want to stay open to feedback, but you don’t want to let every outside opinion derail your confidence. Not everyone needs to hear every version of every track. Choose the people you trust. Choose the ones who know how to give you notes that make the song better — not notes that make you question your whole existence.

It also helps to remind yourself what the demo stage is for. It’s not about showing off. It’s not about proving anything. It’s about catching the spark while it’s fresh and staying curious about where the song could go. When you approach it like that, it takes some of the pressure off. You’re not saying “this is me at my best.” You’re saying, “this is where I’m at right now.”

The scary part of sharing your work doesn’t really go away. But it does get easier the more you do it. And the more you let your demos breathe outside your own head, the more chances you give your music to grow into what it’s meant to be.
